Kanchana

Kanchana (Telugu: కాంచన) is a noted Telugu actress of the 1970s. She acted in all four South Indian languages: Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. She has also acted in Hindi films as well.

Personal Life and Education

Kanchana was born in a well-to-do family. Her original name was Vasundara. She learnt Bharata Natya and Music. She was working as a Air Hostess, when she was discovered by the film director Sridhar. He gave the heroine role in his film kadalikka neramillai in 1963.

Kanchana, the heroine of 150 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi, in the 1970s.

She now lives in Bangalore, close to her sister and brother-in-law.

Career

Kanchana acted in over 150 films, in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi movies. She retired from films in the early 1980s.[1] In 2005, she was presented with the MGR award and in 2007 the ANR Swarna Kankanam award.[2]

She was appropriately known as the Queen of the Seventies in South Indian film industry. Her performances in the movies Kalyana MandapamPavitra BandamManchivadu were well appreciated and recognized.[3] She played the role of Uttara in the film Veerabhimanyu which established her in the industry. Next year she acted in Annapurna pictures film Atma Gouravam with veteran director K. Viswanath.

She acted with Krishna in some glamarous roles in Ave KalluNenante Nene and Dharma Daata. Not only in social roles, she acted some mythological roles in pictures like Sri Krishnavatharam. After retirement as heroine, she acted in some goood films like Ananda Bhairavi and Shrimad Virat Veerabrahmendra Swami Charitra.

Kanchana received the MGR Award for 2003.

There are rumours that were floating around a few years ago about her living in penury. A popular Tamil magazine Kumudam published a report that Kanchana is relying on the prasadam served at a Temple. However in a press release, Kanchana refutes all this with deep anguish.

Kanchana now lives in an apartment right opposite her sister’s and spends her days in meditation, puja, bhajans and in chanting Rama Nama.

The actress recently got the wealth of Rs. 15 crores with the Court ruling against her parents. Kanchana’s parents Kanchana Shastri and Vidyalatha. Kanchana’s parents were wealthy. But her father spent all the money on gambling etc. One day her father took signature of Kanchana on a white paper and without her knowledge converted total assets on his name. After a long legal battle she won and got Rs 15 crore worth wealth.

Kanchana along with her Sister Girija Pandey donated their property in Chennai worth Rs. 15 crore to Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) on 25 October 2010.
